Sleep Apnea
Peaceful Rest Awaits
Start feeling refreshed after a night of sleep! Patients all throughout Escondido, CA and the surrounding areas come to Grand Dentistry for treatment of their sleep disorders before they turn into serious consequences.
Our doctors share a passion for treatment of sleep disorders and sleep apnea, helping patients and their partners enjoy a better, healthier night of rest. Dr. Basso is licensed by prestigious organizations for treatment of sleep apnea, including the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. His continued knowledge and use of advanced equipment allows him to accurately measure and determine if a patient would be successful in treatment before they spend money on the equipment. We use an acoustic pharyngometer to determine the size and collapsibility of the airway in various jaw positions to determine the ideal type and position of appliance to be used for treatment. We also use a rhinometer to determine if there is nasal obstruction and if the obstruction is hard or soft tissue related. We use this information to determine the best course of treatment and if oral appliance therapy will be effective.
What is Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a condition that causes your airways to relax during sleep and prevent enough air from entering your lungs. It’s a serious, potentially life-threatening condition because the oxygen level in your blood drops causing a strain on the heart and lungs. This action creates a disturbance in sleep, which results in a tired feeling. While it is a far more common condition than generally understood, it leaves dangerous lasting effects on your overall health.

How do I know if I Have Sleep Apnea?
Aside from loud snoring and pauses in breathing, sleep apnea symptoms include:
Excessive daytime sleepiness (falling asleep easily & sometimes inappropriately)
Morning headaches
History of high blood pressure
Memory problems or poor judgment
Feelings of depression
Gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn)
Impotence
Nocturia (frequent nighttime urination)
Difficulty concentrating
Personality changes or irritability
We can determine if you have sleep apnea symptoms by asking you a series of sleep-related questions. Based on the score of these questions, we can order a Home Sleep Test or HST. You’ll be recorded in the comfort and convenience of your own bed, so the test is more likely to reflect what actually happens each night.
Based on your results, we can customize a treatment option, whether it’s surgery, CPAP, and oral appliance therapy, to open your airways, to reduce your snoring and sleep apnea.
